Called to Serve

Our lead sacrament handler, Stephen Goterch, works with the Capanahua, Matses and Shipibo traditions of Peru, Kichwa communities of Ecuador, and medicine families of the Sonoran Desert Region of Mexico.

Years ago, the call to bring the plant wisdom back home was given to him by his teachers. Further dietas and training with other practitioners progressed Stephen to serving in several U.S. retreat centers over the years. Luna Wolf Sanctuary is his current home.

Partial proceeds from our donations help to pay it forward, maintaining the sustainability of our traditional indigenous partnerships and their communities.

Our members are invited to attend 5-day dietas with our master curandero Josue Rios in Pucallpa, Peru periodically throughout the year.

Our Ceremonial Sacraments

Grandmother Ayahuasca

  • In many indigenous tribes, the thousand-year-old tradition of ayahuasca is used as a sacrament for spiritual and healing purposes. This Amazonian craft is believed to have the ability to connect individuals with higher states of awareness, while healing the mind-body-spirit.

Modern day society has steadily shown interest in the ancient healing practice. Year by year, more people are called to this practice from all walks of life. Participants are drawn to it for deeper spiritual connection, artistic expression, healing mental ailments, addiction treatments, and much more.

Ayahuasca’s pharmacology consists of combining the basiteriopsis cappi vine with the chacruna leaf (containing dimethyltryptamine - DMT) and other tryptamine-containing plants of the Amazon rainforest. Together, this synergy produces a ceremonial tea that is consumed by each participant. The final brew preparation can take several days to boil and reduce to a liquid brown paste which is served with precise calculation.

  • We use variations of ciello, rojo, and white banisteriopsis caapi pastes sourced from sustainable farming practices in Peru, Ecuador and Hawaii. By using freshly cut vine, we preserve many of the ethereal oils and properties that otherwise get lost in the drying process. We slow boil the vines for many hours with plenty of filtering steps along the way. We then slowly boil the liquid until it becomes our precious caapi paste.

Banisteriopsis caapi is a legendary vine which is also known as the “vine of the souls.” It is the main ingredient in ayahuasca. Many indigenous cultures believe that the drink opens up the user to extraordinary perceptions and healing powers.

Banisteriopsis caapi is richly steeped in cultural mythology and indigenous practices. This explains why it is considered as a unique entheogen that produces a sense of wholesome connection within the user, engendering mystical experiences. It is often referred to as a “master plant teacher” by which one could enter a spiritual healing doorway. We also believe that it facilitates self awareness and dream-like visions, and that it helps overcome existential challenges.

  • Working with Ayahuasca is a disciplined practice that should only be served by experienced practitioners and healers. Holding the container and serving the sacrament is an art that can take several years before one is advanced enough to do so responsibly.

At Luna Wolf Sanctuary, we have more than 20 years of collective experience among our facilitators and medicine carriers who have dedicated their lives to an emotional and spiritual growth. Anchored in the Peruvian tradition, the connection to Amazon lineages is of great importance for our church mission. We have been fortunate to receive the blessings from our elders and teachers over the past 20 years to help conduct this beautiful healing craft.

We’re currently working with brothers Josue and Jimi Rios, the nephews of the world renowned healer Pablo Amaringo, who live and work near Pucallpa, Peru. This has been a gift to the community and our lead medicine carrier, Stephen Goterch, since 2019. Prior to that, Stephen was trained by the descendants of the late Diego Palma of the sacred valley tribe and Shipibo teachers of Iquitos, Peru.

  • There are various beautiful ayahuasca traditions, lineages and styles with roots throughout South America. Luna Wolf is based on the Shipibo and Capanahua tradition of Peru.

Ayahuasca is best used in ceremonial settings with loving intentions. The more we put in, the more we get out of the sacred tea. With our knowledge, studies, and experience we aim to make the preparation approachable and obtainable without too much rigidness, while also honoring and following traditional protocols in a healthy balance.

Upon arrival to the ceremony, participants are greeted by our team of facilitators and guardian assistants. This is a time to ground down and settle into your environment. We provide floor mats for your comfort and space to organize your belongings within the facility. Relaxing background music is played along as we offer servings of the sacred tobacco “hape” as well as our eye-cleansing drops, sananga (both optional).

This can be a time of conversation and communion between the participants and community. Cleansing, protection, and blessings are an important pre-cleansing ritual the Shipibo ayahuasca tradition follows.

Participants are encouraged to partake in the flower bath blessings, putting our purest intentions into the flowers, then squeezing our energy into the flowers and water. This pot of water collects the groups collective positive energy, where we delicately pour the blessed water over the forehead prior to ceremony.

The flower bath is followed by the chakapa (sacred leaf rattle) cleanse and mapacho smoke blown to the crown and hands. This preparation provides authentic traditions that have been passed down for millennia, making our vessels ready for the ceremony.

The evening proceeds with a general introduction from the team as well as a sharing circle and introductions from participants. Breath exercises and movement is also incorporated, leading us into the final prayers before we drink and consume the tea together.

Ceremonies tend to last 3.5 to 4.5 hours. For most people, a single serving of ayahuasca is sufficient. For some participants, however, a second cup is helpful at the 90-minute mark.

Journeys are regarded as an introspective and inner process. When individuals need to express themselves or to have “one-on-one time” with a facilitator or guardian, we have a healing room away from the ceremony where more individualized care is possible.

After the main ceremony service is closed, we offer food and light conversation in the kitchen area, as well as time by bonfire outside. For anyone continuing their journey with the sacrament after the ceremony closes, though, the ceremony space is held strong for the remainder of the night. Participants are encouraged to sleep or rest before morning, when breakfast is served and an integration circle is held to share and reflect.

Our gatherings are based off a retreat setting, meaning various activities are offered between ceremonies during the day. Examples are rest time, group swimming, arts and crafts, yoga, breathwork, movement, and qi gong.

Grandmother Ayahuasca ceremony weekends are Friday through Sunday morning, once per month at the Lake Harriet Spiritual Community, a historical landmark. We also offer outdoor retreats on private land during the warmer months.

Capping our ceremonies at 18 participants allows the group to bond and connect at greater levels. These intimate settings, individualized care, and connections are important to LWS.

Lastly, building a healthy community is important for many members so they can continue their healing paths with strong support. After departing the ceremony, we send links to group chats where participants can stay in touch with one another. Luna Wolf also offers personalized integration services and other healing modalities for participants to take advantage of if feeling called. Support, community and integration is key!

Welcome to all those who feel a connection to these containers.

  • We are blessed to serve our sacraments in the historical Lake Harriet Spiritual Community (LHSC). Visit our office, attend public events or relax into a sound ceremony with the Luna Wolf facilitators.

We also have a generous community that has offered their private land for the warmer seasons to enjoy the power of outdoor ceremonies.

Typically, all ceremonies are performed in dim lighting where the participants can lie down on their mats or sit up depending on what is most comfortable for them. Incense, resin, and smudges are carefully incorporated to deepen the atmosphere of ceremony.

Ícaros, “magical songs” in the Shipibo tradition, are sung during ceremonies to help individuals connect with their higher selves. Song, instrumentation, rhythm, sonic ambience, and silence are all crucial to the energetic flow of a ceremony. Guitar, flute, ngoni, crystal harp, synth keys, crystal and Tibetan bowls, exotic fragrances, rattle, drum, nature ambiance, and spoken word guidance of LWS facilitators will be used. Each moment is spontaneously felt and reflected in the expression of these sounds.

Jaguar Bufo

  • Unlike many plant-based entheogens, concrete historical evidence of Bufo toad secretion usage in ancient rituals is limited. The bufo alvarius toad species is native to the Southwest United States and Northern Mexico Sonoran Desert. The venom of the toad species contains the substance, 5-MeO-DMT, along with other synergistic compounds. Other ancient cultures have used this molecule for healing ceremonies through plant matter forms -- most notably the yopo seeds of South American and the Chaliponga leaves of Colombia.

The toad secretion is ethically harvested through various shamanic families in Mexico. Sacks of the secretion are located on the back and legs of the sacred toad, lightly squeezed to release a small amount of the secretion onto a plate surface which is then dried for 12 hours.

We consider the quality and reliability of our medicines to be of utmost importance. The bufo alvarious toad venom secretions are sourced from a family in the Sonoran Desert that have a relationship with a small network of practitioners of which Stephen is a part of.

LWS has cultivated a deep relationship with the guiding wisdom of the Bufo toad venom. Even in small amounts, it offers a loving embrace to the journey, which is complimentary to the Jaguar sacrament. Organic medicines carry the spirit of the plant or animal, its unique intelligence. LWS believes this to be a crucial component to the ceremony.

  • We also work with 100% pure, plant-derived, 5-MeO-DMT molecule (Jaguar) to compliment the toad secretion and lighten the harvesting burden.

The toad secretion is one of very few potent sources of the 5-MeO-DMT molecule in nature, making it a limited resource. Not only does the Jaguar sacrament take burden off the toad, but its properties compliment and enhance the effectiveness of the toad.

The Jaguar provides sustainable power and consistent precision that is lacking from the toad secretion. Being a monomolecular compound, the dosing is very reliable, so we can offer a larger variety of journey strengths. It encounters fewer resistances due to its purity and ease of induction. It is has a less taxing effect on the cardio-vascular, nervous, and respiratory systems. Some of our more sensitive or physically compromised members exclusively receive only Jaguar due to these advantages.

The Jaguar also acts quicker to dismantle our egoic defenses, making it more likely to reach those big release points, rather than getting stuck in your own way.

More of our membership can journey towards that infinite embrace with this hybrid method of serving bufo, without putting increased pressure on the toads.

  • LWS practices regular ceremony with the Jaguar and Bufo sacraments, thus, the Jaguar-Bufo Ceremony. The Jaguar representing the plant-derived pure molecule, 5-MeO-DMT sacrament and the Bufo referring to the sustainably harvested bufo alvarious toad secretion. Both forms are critical to the beliefs and practices of Luna Wolf Sanctuary.

We begin with welcome talks, logistical information, and a circle of introductions. Taking these steps along with the member intake process is critical to establish rapport and trust as you enter a potentially new realm. A warm welcome to participants forms a critical first impression and sets the trajectory of the ceremony. Grounded compassion and sincerity leads the talks and ceremony. We don’t shy away from either the potential for elation or struggle with this medicine, and don’t imply any bias for one or the other. We commit to total acceptance of what comes within the bounds of safety and responsible practice.

Each of our facilitators (up to 3) will serve a participant one at a time in designated serving area. The rest of the group will wait in a side room set up for the very important pre- and post-processing. This way, those being served are less distracted and more likely to let go into the depth of the experience. It also allows for more processing with our trained space-holders after the medicine effects wear off. Guardian team members will escort participants to and from the serving stations over the course of 2 rounds for each participant.

The serving stations will have a large, soft mat for the participant, with focused support by a facilitator and Guardian team member at all times. We serve smaller amounts to first timers and those that are sensitive.

You will hear curated music tracks and soundscapes along with some facilitator instrumentation. This provides a strong sense of sacred sincerity that is critical in the process of allowing the medicine to do its work.

After everyone has had 2 rounds, the ceremony is closed with a gathering for prayer, giving thanks to the guides, teachers, guardians, sacrament spirits, and participants. At that point there is also an opportunity for everyone to share about their experience if they wish. Participants will be safe to drive in most cases, but having a ride ready can be helpful for some.

  • Jaguar Bufo has it’s primary effects within the first 10-20 minutes, beginning immediately after inhalation. The after-effects last for about another hour, where post-processing can continue to bring about value.

We believe this short, but deep experience is best supported with the full attention of at least 1 facilitator, but most often with a guardian space holder as well. The serving station will be devoted to your process for this time period before doing your post-processing in the side room.

The Sonoran Desert Bufo Toad and Jaguar 5meo sacrament provides a profound and rapid return to a collective consciousness free from the constraints of the thinking mind. This sacrament can pave the way to experiencing the healing ocean of consciousness within us all, which, in turn, allows for a rapid shedding of layers that are out of harmony with the best version of yourself.

As profound as it is, the destination is not as important as the lessons along the way. When given our trust, the toad guides us along that path, revealing our limitations and potential. We are given the opportunity to bring love into our wounds and joys, knowing that on the other side is an infinite embrace that cannot be named.

Going in without any expectations is critical. On a full dose, the rational mind is meant to eventually go completely quiet to achieve the peak beneficial effect, so if you hold on to any thought about what you think it should be, you won’t get there. It teaches us to embrace what is, rather than what we want it to be. Besides, the rational mind wasn’t built to comprehend it anyway, so there’s nothing to lose!

Guardian Kambo

  • Kambo is a traditional medicine practice that dates back roughly 800 years, originating in the upper amazon rainforests of Peru. Kambo comes from the secretion of the nocturnal frog species, PhylloMedusa Bicolor (the frog is never harmed in the process when ethically harvested). This potent secretion contains bio and neuro-peptides that help with various aspects within the mind-body-spirit.

Modern scientific studies have shown that Kambo contains multiple antimicrobial peptides effective against drug-resistant strains of bacteria, fungi, protozoa, parasites and virus. This research by Vittorio Erspamer, who was nominated for a Nobel Prize with his work in discovering Serotonin, was a major advocate for Kambo. Several other ailments have been associated with the effects of the frog’s secretion as well (Luna Wolf does not offer medical treatment).

The origins of the Kambo practice dates back 800 years with the Kaxinawá tribe. According to legend, a Kaxinawá shaman named Kampu had tried to cure many gravely ill members of his tribe as a plague had overcome many of them.

After many unsuccessful attempts to find a cure, Kampu went exploring the forest under the influence of ayahuasca, where he was reportedly given visions and guidance towards a powerful remedy. The spirit of ayahuasca placed a Phyllomedusa bicolor in Kampu’s hands and showed him how to use its skin secretion for healing. From then on, Kampu was known as Pajé Kampu (medicine man).

For generations to come, Kambo expanded to various tribes who used the medicine for their own wellbeing. A common use for Kambo was know to cure “Panema.” Treating Panema is like lifting off the dark cloud of energy that accumulates in our lives. Panema is also known as bad luck, depressed energy, fatigue, laziness, addictions and various diseases or other ailments. Tribes felt the sacred secretion also helped with fertility, gaining stamina for long hunting expeditions, sharpening ones senses, and causing more joy in the village within its members.

As Kambo is gaining more popularity around the world, many participants discover how it can be a valuable modality that synergizes with other plant medicine practices. For example, Kambo as a precurser to catalyze the benefits of ayahuasca or bufo has been used in many retreat centers and communities around the globe.

  • The set and setting for the treatment is of most importance. We conduct all ceremonies in a professional sanitary setup, while also offering the treatment in a ceremonial sacred atmosphere.

We use traditional Kambo Icaro healing songs, sound healing instruments, sage, guidance and space holding to make participants feel comfortable and safe with their experience.

Ceremonies are conducted in the Earth Room located in the downstairs section of the historic Lake Harriet Spiritual Community. Having a comfortable safe container is important when conducting treatments with the art of Kambo. We cap our group size at 12 individuals to promote an intimate environment where we can meet all the participants needs. During the summer months, Luna Wolf conducts outdoor ceremonies throughout the local region. (Private ceremonies are also available for individuals who can not make our monthly event.)

Applying the frog secretion is safe and easy. Points, gates, or dots, as they are referred to, are small burn marks lifting a thin layer of the outer skin. Sizes of the points are no larger than the tip of a medium sized marker, while the pain level is comparable to a mosquito or horse fly bite.

Participants should know that while the burns heal within a few weeks, they do leave a slight discoloration or scar. For this reason, some people have preferences for the location of the points and can have an esthetic design.

During the preparation of the sacrament, once the point and skin is opened up, we then prepare the dried frog secretion into a mucus form. We shape and mold the wet secretion into a small sized ball, which then is placed over the point on the body, entering the body to cross the blood brain barrier.

“Dragon’s blood” -- a natural plant resin -- is applied at the end of the ceremony to help heal the points, also acting as a natural band aid. Shortly after, we close the ceremonial space with an assessment of your personal process while having a discussion regarding integration. Individuals often will feel refreshed and rejuvenated going about their daily tasks, capable of driving home with improved energy, clarity and insight.

Before or after departure we highly recommend breaking fast with wholesome healthy food. Packing a small meal or snacks is helpful. Food intake is important for aiding in the further removal of toxins through digestion and bowel movements. Kambo also demands the energy from food for optimal recovery, restoring blood sugar and insulin levels.

  • The Test Point:

When we start the ceremony, we proceed with a single test point to observe any adverse reactions, which fortunately are extremely rare, and determine how many to do from there. A test point allows insights into any potential sensitivities that can be easily reversed given the small amount of Kambo applied. Newcomers also appreciate this to acclimate before diving in deeper.

The subtle reactions are quite pleasant, increasing vasodilation while loosening tension and anxiety within the body. The test point process typically takes 3-5 minutes. Soon after the participant feels comfortable and acclimated with the onset of the micro dose, we begin to apply the remainder of the secretion to the body over the next 10 minutes.

    This First Phase:

This is often known as the warm flush. This can last up to 5-10 minutes given the participant’s biochemistry. One attribute of the experience is the strengthening and cleansing of the heart muscle with strong vasodilation to the body, often feeling very warm pleasant sensation. The ears, hands, feet, and cranial area can feel a sense of electrical tingling and can be a very gratifying, as the peptides are working and repairing many systems within the body.

    The Second Phase:

This is where the blood pressure begins to safely lower, while the body is removing toxins into the bile tract. The bile that is produced by your liver contains toxins and heavy metals, where Kambo helps facilitate the removal of the bile. The participant will normally will feel nausea and have the early stages of the purge arising. The facilitators then assist with helping the participant purge into a small bucket.

The purge is viewed as a sacred release, removing energetic blockages, past trauma and toxins where much relief is often felt during and after the process. The participant also may need to use the toilet, as the body is cleansing itself and releasing toxins through the intestines. This second phase of Kambo can typically last 10-30 minutes in gradual increments and phases.

    The Third Phase:

This is the rest and recovery which can last roughly 15-30 minutes. After the sacred purging, the body will begin to regulate itself with improved vitality and circulation. Often people will go into a deep sense of relaxation and meditation. This process is held in a sacred manner, using aroma therapy, calming music and some silence, as the senses of the body feel very alive and rejuvenated.

    • The day of the ceremony, consume no more than 3 cups of water AND refrain from all liquids for 3 hours before the ceremony. You will drink all your water right before the treatment is applied.

    • The fast from food is 8-20 hours before Kambo, meaning you don't consume calories for at least 8 hours. For some people, fasting is harmful, be mindful to your needs and don't push it too far. If it’s an evening ceremony, try eating a larger meal the night before your fast or a light meal no later than 8 hours before the ceremony. Morning ceremonies just skip breakfast and eat a light dinner.

    • No alcohol or strong drugs for 48 hours. Don’t take your regular medication/supplements the day of the ceremony, you can wait until afterwards to take them though. If you feel you must take your medication, try to use it early in the morning prior or with your morning meal. Medications such as stimulants or SSRIs, we would suggest to do your best to take after the Kambo treatment.

    • No sweat lodges the week before/after. No water fasting, enemas, or colonics 3 days before/after. No hot tubs or saunas 1 day before/after. They add too much to your electrolyte balance, which can pose a severe risk to your health.

  • The traditional method we use is 3 ceremonies in a series. This starts with the initial basic ceremony, 3-8 gates on the arm or leg. Depending on the length of your integration process, we follow with a second ceremony working the back and spine. This is followed with a third specialized ceremony, focusing on meridian points and optional auricular points. Often, beneficial results are being seen with the gradual progression, where individuals can opt for more Kambo ceremonies for further healing needs if deemed necessary.

A single ceremony may be enough to meet your needs while being highly beneficial. Although many practitioners advocate getting a series of 3-4 treatments within the timeframe of 1-4 months. Some participants like to progress with their ceremonies at a faster rate, while others may need longer breaks focusing on their integration. This will be assessed as we work Kambo together, having a in-depth conversation and evaluating what timeline works best for the individual.

Each Kambo ceremony you receive acts more and more efficiently building from the previous treatments. Kambo works in incremental layers, removing energetic and biological toxins in stages. Within the months of receiving the Kambo protocol, which can be called the initiation and inoculation process, the mind- body-spirit heals at a rapid rate.

Once the traditional protocol is complete, (3-4 ceremonies over 1-4 months) coming for a single ceremony maintenance session every 3 to 12 months will continue to improve and maximize your healing process. The continuation of the kambo practice is a practical way to strengthen your relationship with the medicine over the years to come.
